Laura Parfrey is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Botany and Zoology. She is an evolutionary biologist and microbial ecologist. Her research program contributes to understanding the biodiversity of bacteria and microbial eukaryotes, especially those that live in association with plant, animal, and macroalgal hosts. Her lab uses a combination of surveys, manipulative experiments, and data synthesis to understand the distribution of microbial diversity and how microbes influence ecosystems and host biology. One current project is identifying bacteria that influence kelp growth and development and may lead to greater productivity and resilience.
